Message from the President

2009/2010 Executive

Now that most of us have dug ourselves out of the largest snowstorm in recent memory, we can focus on those really important matters, like the fast approaching softball season.

I would like to start off by thanking some people.  Thank-you to Mark Haidl, who stepped down as president this fall, not to relax, but so he could fill his new role as RMSL president.  His great organizational skills will be missed.  Thank you to Jim Lehrer who stayed on as treasurer last season even though his daughter no longer played.  As well, I would like to thank Jeff Romanuk (equipment manager), Gord Hamilton (PeeWee Coordinator) and Arlene Slimmon (registrar) for their time spent volunteering. I would also like to welcome and thank Doris Harrison (PeeWee co-ordinator) a tireless volunteer, Tim Harrison (Vice President), Bob Chmielnicki (treasurer), and Marj Heisler (registrar) for stepping forward and joining the executive. Last but not least, thank-you to those executive members who remained on for another year of fun.  I look forward to working with all of you to ensure that the Lazers continue to be the best ran zone in the league!

While I am sure that most of you have been busy chasing your kids to their winter activities, we have been quietly getting prepared for the upcoming season.  With the closure of Triple Play Sports and the reluctance of either school board to let their gyms be used for any ball activities, we have had to cancel winter camps and been left scrambling to secure evaluation locations.  Jamie Watson has worked tirelessly to find us the best possible options and we are sure that they will turn out great.

I hope that this ball season brings to everyone a fantastic experience, one that develops new friendships and renews old ones, one that develops skill and character in your children, one that brings fun, laughter, good times and great memories.

I look forward to seeing you all at the diamonds this summer.

Terry

Coaching/Player Manuals

Along with electronic distribution of this newsletter we are going to try and save a few more trees by not mailing out registration this year. A word form is available this year which will let you type in your information and then print it out or you can print a PDF version and fill it in by hand. See http://www.lazers.ca/reg/

The RMSL has a great collection of manuals for player/coach development. For coaches manuals see
 http://www.rmgsl.ca/Coaches.aspx

For players see

but you will require a password. Please email playermanual@l azers.ca  for the password.

Pitching/Catching Selection Rules

Coaching Certifications

Players that wish to evaluate as a pitcher or catcher in Squirt and above will be asked to identify themselves at the beginning of the evaluation so that they can be filtered through those stations.  If your daughter or son wishes to try one or both of those positions we strongly encourage that they evaluate for them.  The Lazers Zone will be evaluating pitchers/catchers both as a pitcher/catcher AND as a player - they receive two separate scores. Evaluating as a pitcher or catcher will in no way hinder that player's opportunity to play on an A team, if they rank high enough in their player score.  However for PeeWee A and Bantam A only the top 3 selected pitchers will be allowed to pitch. It is also likely that only the top two catchers will catch regularly. Pitchers/catchers invited to join the A team as a player, but ranked below these cut-offs, may choose to move to the B team if they want to pitch at all or if they want to catch regularly.

Interested in Coaching Certification?

The Lazers will pay for clinic fees (after successful completion) as long as you have a child registered to play Lazers Softball.

Before registering, contact the Lazers Coach/Player development coordinator, Jamie Watson at 761-2203

Recommended Coaching Certifications:

  • If you are coaching a 5-10 year olds you should attend a Learn to Play (LTP) Orientation.
  • If you are coaching all Squirt categories, Pee Wee B & C, Bantam B & C or Midget C you should be taking our Community Sport On-going Participation.
  • Those coaching in categories leading to a Western or a Canadian Championship (Senior A & B, Junior A & B, Midget A & B, Bantam A, Pee Wee A) should take the Competition Introduction Clinic

As of 2009, we will no longer be offering our old Level 2 Softball Technical & Practical clinic. This is replaced by the Competition Introduction clinic. This clinic is 14 hours in length and covers Technical, Practical and Theory components.

Facemasks/No more socks

Lazers Clothing Orders

Facemasks become mandatory in the Lazers zone on April 1st, 2009 for the Mite (9&10) and above divisions.

Due to increasing problems with variances in sock sizes from year to year we have decided to get out of the sock business and allow individuals to personally size their socks at one of the many sports stores in Regina. The white and Royal Blue socks have previously been ordered from Western Cycle which offers Lazers a 20% discount but you may be able to find them elsewhere. Divisions requiring socks are listed in http://lazers.ca/info/equip/

Print off a form and bring it to the Evaluations.  We’ll have sizing samples available there.

Submit your order by March 22nd, 2010.  Items should be here for season start (no second order planned)

See http://lazers.ca/apparel/ which currently has last year’s order form.

NOTE: there may be price changes to pass on

Criminal Record Checks

Midget Division

Coaches in the Regina Minor Softball League are required to obtain criminal record checks yearly. Details on how to obtain your criminal record check will be provided once coach selections have been completed.

The RMSL Midget division plays only Wed. and Sundays to accommodate work schedules. Players may also want to try out for the Ladies league teams which are more competitive – see http://eteamz.active.com/midgetsoftball/
